On the scattering properties of polyelectrolyte gels

چکیده
We present a simple model for scattering properties of polyelectrolyte gels at swelling equilibrium. In the weak screening limit where the Debye-Hfickel screening length is larger than the mesh size of the gel, the direct electrostatic interactions are negligible and the swelling is driven by the osmotic pressure of the counterions. The tension created by this pressure is transmitted through the crosslinks to the elastic char s which behave as isolated chains with an applied force at their end points. The structure fz =tor of the gel can be split into a frozen component due to the average concentration heterogencities and a thermodynamic component due to concentration fluctuations. The frozen component has a peak at a wavevector of the order of the mesh size of the gel, the thermodynamic component has a peak at a higher wavevector of the order of the inverse transverse radius of the chains. At infinite times the dynamic structure factor relaxes towards the frozen component of the static structure factor. In the limit of small wavevectors the relaxation is diffusive with a diffusion constant equal to the Stokes diffusion constant of the Pincus blobs of the stretched chains. The diffusion constant shows a minimum at a wavevector of the order of the inverse transverse radius of the chains. 1532 JOURNAL DE PHYSIQUE II N°8

Ion/polymer Interactions in Polyelectrolyte Gels
We report results from experimental studies performed on polyelectrolyte gels to understand the volume transition induced by multivalent cations. Macroscopic osmotic and mechanical measurements are made to determine the effect of ion binding on the elastic and mixing contributions of the network free energy. Small-angle neutron scattering is used to reveal the role of multivalent ions in the or...
متن کاملEffect of calcium/sodium ion exchange on the osmotic properties and structure of polyelectrolyte gels.
We discuss the main findings of a long-term research program exploring the consequences of sodium/calcium ion exchange on the macroscopic osmotic and elastic properties, and the microscopic structure of representative synthetic polyelectrolyte (sodium polyacrylate, (polyacrylic acid)) and biopolymer gels (DNA). A common feature of these gels is that above a threshold calcium ion concentration, ...

The physiological functions of biological macromolecules strongly depend upon their conformation. Study of the thermodynamic and structural aspects of ion/polymer interactions has the potential to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of ion mediated structural organization of charged biomacromolecules (e.g., nucleic acids, proteins, proteoglycans, etc.) within cells or extracellular...

Introduction In the past decade several investigations have been reported on various hydrogels,1-3 particularly neutral polymer gels [e.g., poly(acrylamide) or poly(vinyl alcohol)] and weakly charged polyelectrolytes [e.g., poly(acrylic acid) or poly(styrenesulfonate)]. Less attention has been paid to neutralized polyelectrolytes in the presence of added salt. It is generally understood that fu...
